Description
The partridge pea (Chamaecrista fasciculate) is a wildflower with bright flowers and pretty leaves made up of narrow leaflets that partially close when you touch them. That response is why the plant is sometimes called a sensitive-pea. Other common names include the prairie partridge pea, locust weed, the sleeping plant, and golden cassia. I found this specimen growing on the bank of Lake DeSoto. In 2011, Missouri River flooding covered this area for an extended period, and the plant life that protected the banks from erosion died. The partridge pea is considered an excellent plant for erosion control, so it was good to see it thriving there. Staff at the DeSoto National Wildlife Refuge told me that according to his diary, this plant was collected by Merriwether Lewis (Lewis and Clark expedition) on July 18, 1804 in the vicinity of present day Nebraska City, NE.
