Description
We visited Plum Island and the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge in Massachusetts on a beautiful mid-June afternoon. We stopped at the Hellcat Interpretive Trail, a loop boardwalk with spurs that allow visits of the various land and water features of the area: forested wetlands, dunes, a view of the ocean, and a fresh water marsh. It was on the latter loop that I spotted this wading bird, probably an egret, fishing in the shallows at the edge of the reeds. I waited hopefully and was rewarded when it decided that the grass might be greener - or the hunting better - on the other side of this open area and moved slowly and gracefully across the still water.
