Description
The waxy monkey tree frog (Phyllomedusa sauvagii) is a hylid (a tree toad of the family Hylidae). Almost its entire life cycle is spent in trees – they even lay their eggs on leaves, but choose those that overhang water so that when they hatch, the tadpoles can drop into it. They have long fingers and can grasp objects. Rather than jumping, they walk or climb from branch to branch, hence the word “monkey” in their names. They are also called painted-bellied tree frogs because of the markings on their underside.
