Description
A male red-bellied woodpecker hangs out his favorite place - a tree trunk in which he can find plenty of insects to eat. These medium-sized birds are mostly found in the eastern United States; I photographed this one at Schramm Park, a state park in eastern Nebraska. Though its red head is more obvious, you can just see the reddish tinge on the belly from which it gets its name. Aside from the striking red cap, my favorite marking on this bird is the black and white pattern on the wings and back. Though they are are omnivorous and also eat fruits and seeds, they love insects. One interesting thing I learned is that in addition to the long beak, their barbed tongues can extend two inches farther and their spit is sticky so they are excellent bark foragers.
