Description
This female red-bellied woodpecker (Melanerpes carolinus) came to visit one day in late winter. She paused briefly on a branch, strikingly displayed against a cloudless, blue sky. These medium-sized woodpeckers are common in forests of the East, rarer in eastern Nebraska where I live. The have black and white barred backs and red caps; the male has a red nape and crown, but the female has only the red nape with a bit more color near the beak. These birds eat insects, fruits, nuts, and seeds; they also like the suet I put out by a feeder.
