Description
This juvenile red-headed woodpecker (Melanerpes erythrocephalus) was intent on its business. With its dingy belly, brown head, and blackish brown back, it is not nearly as showy as the adult of the species which has a bright red head, black back with white secondary remiges, and a clean, white belly. These birds eat just about anything from seeds to insects to, very occasionally, small rodents. Sometimes they even eat bark - as this one may have been doing; otherwise, I’m sure there are many tasty small insects in the crevices. Photographed in eastern Nebraska on a very mild, early December day - the snow has not yet begun to fly, though it will soon.
