Description
I photographed this adult red-headed woodpecker (Melanerpes erythrocephalus) at the bird feeders near the education center at Schramm State Park in eastern Nebraska on a beautiful January day. Areas like Schramm, where natural environments are safe-guarded, are increasingly important to the preservation of birds and wildlife. This woodpecker is omnivorous. It commonly eats insects, earthworms, nuts, seeds, and berries, rarely other small creatures, eggs, and bark. When insects and spiders are common, it flies out from a perch to catch them in the air, forages on the ground for them, or seeks them out in crevices in tree bark. In the fall, it stores acorns and other nuts to feed on during the winter, but feeders are also a welcome food source in the cold months.
