Artist's Description
There's no question in my mind that the ground in the redwood forests in northern California is as beautiful and awe-inspiring as the gigantic trees themselves. Wherever you look, the densely shaded, damp forest floor is alive and even covered with ferns, redwood sorrel, and other moisture loving plants. Here the growth was from a decomposing fallen branch rather than directly from the earth. That enabled me to get a perspective that makes it look as if I am somehow underground.
Redwood sorrel, Oxalis oregana, is often mistaken for clover; however, its leaves are heart-shaped rather than rounded. The two most common ferns in these state and national parks are western sword fern (Polystichum munitum) and California maidenhair (Adiantum jordanii)
