Description
Joigny is a commune in north-central France, located on the banks of the river Yonne. The old city was founded in 369 AD and was fortified in the Middle Ages. This is a side entry to one of the two oldest churches, Saint Jean de Joigny. It dates from the 13th century and is located near the very top of the old town. It was reconstructed about 1490 after the 100 Years War, but seriously damaged by fire in 1530. The work of rebuilding went on for nearly 50 years, from 1548-1596. The lower parts are Gothic in style, but the upper part was rebuilt in Renaissance style. The edifice was classified as a Historic Monument in 1931.
A number of notable people have ties to the town of Joigny. Among them are novelist Marcel Aymé, Yom Tov of Joigny, a rabbi and poet, Anne Plantagenet, and Saint Madeleine Sophie Barat who founded the Roman Catholic Society of the Sacret Heart in 1800.
