Description
Army soldiers shoot off a cannon on the 4th of July as part of an Independence Day "salute to the states" at Fort Atkinson, Nebraska. This military fort was built in the 1820's; its primary purpose was to protect the fur trade. Although it was only active for about eight years, at its peak, it garrisoned over 1000 soldiers and as many citizens lived just beyond the walls. From May through October, the Friends of Fort Atkinson reenact life of the period on the first weekend of the month. Presented here in black and white, I also have a color version in my Fort Atkinson gallery.
