Description
This sandhill crane (Antigone canadensis), feeding in the grass in a field beside a wetlands area in eastern Nebraska, lifted its head momentarily as if to assure itself that I wasn't coming too near. These birds are mostly herbivorous, and you often see them rooting around on the ground looking for seeds. Their plumage is gray though during breeding season it becomes stained and can look brownish. The red mark on the forehead has the shape of a heart when you are looking straight at them.
