Description
Sandpipers (Scolopacidae) are common on beaches everywhere. This family of waders includes many species, most of which eat small crustaceans, mussels, crabs, and other invertebrates that they pick from the sand. Where there is one, there are usually many, and I felt lucky to catch this one isolated from its friends as it strutted along the shore. I also enjoy the interest the patterns of the water add to the background of this minimalist composition - the faint line in the sand created by the mark of the leading edge of a wave, the shiny, wet soil left by a more recent wave, and the tiny bit of receding water in the upper left corner. I found this little guy on a beach near Marquette, Michigan.
