Description
This photo of a sewer cover located in Papillion, Nebraska, is relatively plain. Like most maintenance covers it is made of cast iron and round in shape. The lettering around the outside of the circle reads “City of Omaha” on one side and “Sewer” on the other. The City of Omaha sewer system has three types of collection systems: one for storm runoff, one for sewage, and one that combines them. The whole is divided into the Missouri River and the Papillion Creek Systems. This particular cover is in the town of Papillion where most of the system has been developed since 1940 and is separated rather than combined; I suspect that this cover is over a sanitary (waste or raw sewage) section. In addition to the words, the cover has raised radiating lines in a design that divides it into triangular wedges and curved trapezoidal shapes. There are also two holes in the cover. These are called pick holes; a specially designed pick or hook can be placed in the hole to lift the cover when maintenance or inspection is required.
