Description
Every year hundreds of thousands of snow geese, Answer caerulescens or Chen caerulescens) migrate through eastern Nebraska and Kansas and western Missouri, huge flocks of them stopping at Loess Bluffs National Wildlife Refuge, a wetlands sanctuary in northwestern Missouri. They use the migratory pathway known as the Central Flyway as they make their way south in the late fall, back north in late winter or early spring. This year (2022) I was privileged to visit the refuge on a peak day in late February. The experience was extraordinary and unforgettable; as this 2:1 ratio panoramic shot of one "rise" suggests, it seems as if one could cross the wetlands pools walking only on the backs of these birds.
