Description
These two trumpeter swans (Cygnus buccinators) were swimming and feeding in the shallow waters of a wetlands in northwestern Missouri, Loess Bluffs National Wildlife Refuge. These native North American birds are the largest remaining species of waterfowl on the continent. Their wingspan may reach more than 10 feet. Since the early 1900’s when they were thought to number under 100, the Trumpeter Swan Society and wildlife agencies have carefully and gradually brought the wild population to over 63,000 (2015). Nevertheless, much of their original habitat has been destroyed and they are considered endangered in a number of states.
