Description
On an early February day, the shallow water in the wetlands ponds at Loess Bluffs National Wildlife Refuge was partially frozen, creating alternating stripes of clear water and ice of varying thicknesses. A pair of trumpeter swans (Cygnus buccinator) floating in open water broke the striped pattern. The refuge is located in northwestern Missouri, near Mound City and north of Saint Joseph. Every year migrating waterfowl pass through on their way south in late fall and again in early spring (or late winter) as they fly back to their summer breeding grounds.
