Description
A swallowtail rests a moment before flitting to another blossom to sip its nectar. The Eastern tiger swallowtail (Papilio glaucus) is relatively common in this area (Omaha and environs) and points east. It’s a large, showy butterfly with yellow wings marked with black veins, borders, and stripes (hence the word “tiger” in its name). It is the state butterfly or insect of half a dozen states: Virginia, Delaware, Alabama, Georgia, and both Carolinas. This insect particularly enjoys deciduous forests and is often found in woodlands as well as beside rivers or creeks. I spotted this one in Fontenelle Forest Nature Preserve in Bellevue, Nebraska.
