Description
I came upon this quiet scene in the lowlands of a riverside forest in the Midwest. The water was shallow. Submerged twigs, leaves, and logs broke the surface of the water. A fallen oak leaf floated on it, jeweled beads of duckweed clung to its edge as if for shelter or comfort. As I watched, a ripple started and grew, maybe started by a bursting bubble, possibly by a small insect landing.
I found this quotation from Oscar Wilde: "All art is at once surface and symbol. Those who go beneath the surface do so at their peril. Those who read the symbol do so at their peril. It is the spectator, and not life, that art really mirrors." I took my title from those words.
