Description
There’s pretty much no denying the surprised expression on the face of this eastern screech owl (Megascops asio) – those enormous, round eyes jump right out at you. A small owl, the screech-owl is relatively common in the eastern United States. Because these raptors are nocturnal and the streaked plumage of the gray morph gives them such good camouflage (they are extremely difficult to see against the bark of a tree, for example), they are very difficult to see. Smaller birds sometimes mob a screech-owl (or other raptor), swooping around it with noisy calls to get it to leave the area; this behavior can help you spot one. I am also told to look for their droppings, distinctive oval pellets, which may litter the ground below the branches of a tree one likes to roost in.
