Description
A sandhill crane (Grus canadensis) lifts off from a large gathering that is feeding in a cornfield though the image also suggests those at the tail end of the flock as they come together in the field each evening. These migratory birds winter in southern states and Mexico; their breeding grounds are in northern states, Canada, and Alaska. They take their name from the Platte River valley on the edge of the Nebraska Sandhills, the setting for this image; the area is an important stopover on their migration route, especially in the spring when up to 450,000 birds migrate through.
This image is based on nine separate photographs taken in burst mode, combined in post-processing, converted to sepia, and textured and digitally painted.
