Description
These austere, sculpted figures are a detail from the “Passion Façade”of La Sagrada Familia, a Roman Catholic church in Barcelona, Spain. The three women represent the three times of Peter’s denial, the night before the crucifixion. The bas relief rooster looks toward dawn. The sculptures, begun in 1987, are the work of a team of sculptors led by Josep Maria Subirachs. The church, consecrated as a minor basilica in 2010, has a very long history of construction. It was begun in 1882; in 1883 Antoni Gaudi took over as the main architect. Though this façade was not begun until nearly 30 years after his death in 1926, it was completed according to a design he created ten years before he died.
