A determined Colorado pinyon pine, Pinus edulis,clings stubbornly to the edge of the canyon rim at Sunrise Point in Bryce Canyon National Park. Other common names for this tree include shortened forms like pinyon pine, Colorado pinyon, or simply pinyon; in addition it is sometimes called a two-needle pine, nut pine, or pino dulce. The tree is a gnarled evergreen with a compact crown; its needles or leaves occur in pairs. The nuts of this tree, pinyon nuts, are delicious whether eaten raw or roasted. The local animals can attest to how tasty they are - they are popular with jays, wild turkeys, bear, deer, and other wildlife. It's native habitat includes rocky mesas and dry mountain slopes; the plant requires little water and dry soil. It is also drought and cold tolerant so it's perfectly at home here overlooking the hoodoo formations on the slopes of the canyon below and beyond.
