Description
The Center Street Bridge, also known as the Women of Achievement Bridge, opened in 2010 and has become a landmark in Des Moines, Iowa. Its design is known as a tied-arch, bowstring-arch, or bowstring-girder. The bridge has two paths or trails, one for foot traffic (viewer’s left here) and the other for bicycles (viewer’s right), separated by a center divider. The perspective here is head on into the paths and divider, looking from the east to the west side of the Des Moines River. A small portion of the city’s skyline can be seen in the background - the pedestrian side of the walkway has the better view of downtown Des Moines. The bridge, included in the Principal Riverwalk, marks the north end of that loop, a trail 1.2 - 1.5 miles (depending on sources).
