Description
Fort Atkinson was a United States military post on a bluff overlooking the Missouri river. It was only active between 1820-1827, but at its peak, nearly 1200 soldiers were stationed there. In addition, there were a number of civilians associated with the fort including officers’ wives and children, women employed by the army as laundresses, teamsters, and laborers. The fort had to be pretty much self-sufficient, so there were extensive gardens and farming.
