Description
The yellow-headed blackbird, Xanthocephalus Xanthocephalus, is in the same family as blackbirds and orioles. These birds nests in colonies in fresh water marshes or wetlands. Each male mates with several females and stakes out an area within the colony. He drives off red-winged blackbirds, marsh wrens, and other birds that favor this environment and defends his territory by singing. Most sources describe the sound of the yellow headed blackbird as unpleasant, but I found it interesting and actually delightful, even if not particularly tuneful. The bird's two outstanding characteristics are a splash of white on the wings, most visible when it takes flight; and, of course, the golden yellow head.
I photographed this male in eastern Iowa, only about a mile from the Nebraska border.
