A male African lion, Panthera leo, pauses momentarily in his descent of a rocky incline. In sub-Saharan Africa where it lives in the wild, this large member of the cat family is considered a vulnerable species and is endangered. Lions once inhabited all of Africa and their habitat extended from eastern Europe into India. I photographed the young male you see here in a zoo; I applied a light painted look to the image, primarily to the background.
