Description
The Cape Disappointment lighthouse is actually more properly simply called a light as there was not enough room for an attached keeper's dwelling. Perched on a promontory at the mouth of the Columbia River in Washington, this light was completed in 1856. Its location was not ideal: the sound of the ocean waves often muted that of its fog bell and ships coming from the north could not see it in time to avoid the dangerous rocky coastline. Use was discontinued in 1881. It is now located in the Cape Disappointment state park.
