"Checkered Past" is a simple vintage still life that centers on an old checkerboard for checkers (also known as draughts in British English and dames or damas in some non-English languages). The game board is on a wooden table in a plain room in Fort George, a National Historic Site in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada.
