Description
The saguaro cacti (Carnegiea gigantean) that you see here, standing watch like sentinels over the surrounding landscape, are unique to the Sonoran Desert in southern Arizona and California and northern Mexico. This specific scene is in Gates Pass, just off the road that leads west through the Tucson Mountains. The saguaro cactus can live 150 years or longer. They often grow branches or arms as they age, though some never do; armless cacti are called spears. The crop ratio of this image is 2:3; I also have a panoramic 1:2 ratio version in my The Southwest - Arizona gallery.
