In this head-on view, a European paper wasp (Polistes dominula) appears ready for a serious confrontation if her nest is threatened. She probably was, but I wasn't, so our photo shoot was uneventful. She had chosen the inside of our barbecue grill for her construction project; the naturally black background sets her off beautifully.
