Description
Mackinac Bridge crosses the Straits of Mackinac between Michigan's Upper and Lower Peninsulas. The straits are the connecting waterway between Lake Michigan and Lake Huron. The bridge itself is nearly 5 miles long and is suspended between two anchorages with two towers between them. Four lanes of traffic carry I-75 cars and trucks across the suspension bridge between Mackinaw City on the south side and St. Ignace on the north. Its longest span, the center span between the towers, is 3,800 ft (1,158 m); it bows upward and clearance in the center is 155 ft (47 m). The view here is from the east and includes the south tower with the eginning of the incline to the middle. In the water below a parasailer, towed by a small, motorized craft, enjoys the last of a chilly but pleasant mid-September day.
