Description
This ear of maize or corn (Zea mays), protruding from the stem at the midsection of the plant, is already tasseling. The ears are the female flowers or inflorescences. They are surrounded by several layers of ear leaves - husks. At the end is the tassel, an inflorescence of male flowers. Corn is one of the most important agricultural crops of the Midwest. It is raised for many purposes: ethanol, animal feed, corn syrup, and human consumption.
