Description
This is the entrance to the metro (subway) on Ile de la Cite in Paris, France: Metropolitain Cite. These classic style entrances were built between 1900-1912 and designed by the art nouveau architect Hector Guimard. He designed two types of entrances, roofed and open; he took his inspiration from nature for both styles. This particular station was constructed in the open style. Ornate, wrought-iron, curved lampposts flank and support the "Metropolitain - Cité" sign. They are designed to suggest plant stems and leaf motifs are used throughout. 86 of the original 142 Guimard entrances are still extant, many preserved as historical monuments; only a few are still in use. Bicycles are a popular and important means of transportation in the capital city. A commuter has locked his red bike to the railing of the exit. The open structure behind the entrance is a covered, open air flower and bird market.
