Description
I found this beautiful old barn, its weathered wood siding now gray from exposure to the elements, when we were heading west on hwy 31 in western Michigan to visit Point Betsie light. It is located in either Grand Traverse or Benzie county. The best part of the building, for me, is the relatively narrow strip of foundation. I love the irregularity of shapes and colors of the stones as well as the brightly painted, red doors. The contrasting colors and textures and the gambrel roof add interest to the barn's north end. This style roof was also called a Dutch roof in 18th century England and North America; its design maximizes headroom inside the building's upper level while preserving the advantages of a slanted roof.
