Description
This black and white photo shows a small section of the three story high, double helix staircase at Chambord Castle (Chateau de Chambord). Located in the Loire Valley in northwestern France, construction of this palace was begun in 1519 as a hunting retreat by Francis I. Though it was never quite completed, was ransacked and even left abandoned for some years after the French Revolution, it is still an impressive and fascinating place to visit. Now owned by the state, the building and its extensive grounds are a popular tourist destination. The double staircase, design of which is thought to have been at least influenced by Leonardo da Vinci, and the roof, which can be visited and is the site of any number of unusual chimneys so that it's a delight to explore, are two of the reasons why it's so famous.
