Artist's Description
This replica of a sod house, located in the Toadstool Geologic Park in northwestern Nebraska, was constructed by the Nebraska National Forest in 1984. Sod houses were common on the treeless prairies in the late 1800's and well into the 20th century. The original of this one was built on this site in 1930. Prairie grasses had tough, dense root systems that held the earth together so blocks of the earth could be cut and then stacked like bricks.
