Description
The American sycamore tree, Platanus occidentalis, has very distinctive bark, both in appearance and in the fact that it sloughs off in irregular, thin plates, especially higher up on the tree. The pieces of bark fall to the ground and leave the surface of the trunk and branches small and much lighter - a silvery gray that is almost white in some light. All tree bark has to “give” to the growth of the tree; on most trees it splits or stretches; but sycamore bark is very rigid and cannot stretch, so it flakes off instead.
I created this abstract by layering a number of pieces of shed bark that I found lying on the ground. As you can see, they have very distinctive textures and patterns. I increased the saturation quite a bit which is responsible for the wide color variation ranging from reds to yellows and oranges to blues and purples.
