An American goldfinch, Spinus tristis, plucks a seed from the center of a pink coneflower in a pretty garden. This pretty little migratory songbird is also called an Eastern goldfinch or lightning bird. Its diet consists of seeds or grains and its beak is perfectly adapted for eating them. I photographed him in midsummer in eastern Nebraska.
