A painted look gives the gold and brown tones of the background a glow that frames the nest and this mother Anna's Hummingbird and her hungry chicks beautifully. As people have transplanted exotic plants into the inland deserts of the United States, this medium-sized hummer (Calypte anna) has been able to extend its breeding range from southern California into Arizona where I took this photo.
