The magic of the light on this from-the-back view of a beautiful balloon flower reveals the translucent nature of its petals. Also called a Korean, Chinese or Japanese bellflower, the Platycodon grandiflorus is a member of the Campanulaceae family. It gets its names from the balloon-like shape of the buds and the bell-like shape of the blossom. Considered a medicinal plant, it is used in Asia for its anti-inflamatory, anti-allergy and anti-cancer properties. It has also been shown to lower cholesterol in laboratory rats.
