Description
The black saddlebags (Tramea lacerate) is a large, North American dragonfly. Its name comes from its coloring and from the blotchy marks on the wings up close to the body. The body is black; according to sources the head is dark brown, but on this specimen it looked black, too, which influenced my decision to convert this photo to black and white. These insects are found near still, stagnant water. They are carnivorous and helpful in controlling other insect pests such as mosquitoes. My reading also indicated that they fly almost constantly and rarely perch, though this one was quite obliging.
