Description
An expansive view opens up to a calm sea with a sizable rocky islet centered near the horizon. A solitary bird is captured in flight, adding life to the otherwise tranquil seacoast scene.
Along the Washington and Oregon coast numerous "sea stacks", rocks more resistant to erosion than the land around them, stick out of the ocean, indicating where the coastline was millions of years ago. At Bandon Beach there are a number of them, the best known of which is called "Face Rock". From the cliff above the beach, at the right angle, the formation resembles an upturned human profile. According to Native American legend, it's the face of an Indian princess who ran into the water and was killed by an evil spirit.
On a visit to Face Rock State Scenic Viewpoint, which sits atop a headland called Gravel Point, you can also enjoy watching seabirds. We were too late for the puffins that come through, but I enjoyed watching the seagulls as they caught updrafts and then floated on the air currents just off the cliffs.
