Artist's Description
This pretty little flower is on a Kousa or Japanese dogwood tree (Cornus kousa); other common names include the Chinese or Korean kousa. The petals are actually bracts, modified leaves with a flower cluster in the axil. As is the case with the poinsettia, the bracts of the dogwood are larger and showier than the true flower. The pointed tips on the bracts help distinguish it from other flowering dogwood trees. The kousa is hardier than and flowers about a month later than the Cornus florida which makes it the preferred variety for the Midwest where I live. I found this particular specimen in full bloom in late May in eastern Nebraska.
