Artist's Description
A pair of pinecones with evergreen branches in the background makes a perfect winter or holiday close-up. The cone on the left is open, the one on the right still partially closed. What you see here are the scales; they protect the seeds that are at their base. The pattern of the scale arrangement is in a spiral, sometimes referred to as a Fibonacci spiral. When leaves (or in this case the scales) form a spiral pattern, it’s called a phyllotactic spiral. And that, I suspect, is more than you wanted to know about this photo :)
