A perfectly formed pumpkin lies in the grass, just outside the bounds of the garden and ready for harvest. This beautiful, large vegetable is a squash, Cucurbita pepo, symbolic of autumn and popular in that season in the United States. It is used for carving jack-o'lanterns at Halloween and for pie filling at Thanksgiving.
