As the sun moves out from behind a cloud, the resulting play of light and shadows makes the rock Formations in the Valley of Fire even more interesting than usual. The oldest state park in Nevada, Valley of Fire is located about an hour northeast of Las Vegas. When the sun hits the red sandstone, the rocks can look as if they are on fire - hence the name of the park. Besides the sandstone, there are formations of limestone, shale, and conglomerates. Hearty desert plants cling to life at their base.
