Description
This brilliant scarlet cup fungus was only about an inch and a half, maybe two inches across. It was huddled at the base of a piece of rotting wood on the forest floor and was quite conspicuous by its contrast with the neutral colors of earth and decaying leaves around it. Also known as the scarlet elf cap, the Sarcoscypha coccinea is found on all continents except Antarctica. It usually fruits in winter and early spring and that was the case for this specimen which I found on an unseasonably warm day in late January in the Fontenelle Nature Preserve in eastern Nebraska.
