Description
A small fleet of U. S. mail trucks, done with their work for the day, sits in the parking lot of a suburban post office. The vehicles are ready to be loaded to go out the next day. These boxy trucks, so familiar to so many, are Grumman LLV's (long life vehicles). They were manufactured from 1987-1994 and are overdue to be replaced. Contracts for replacement vehicles were due to be let in March, 2020; unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic has caused those plans to be put on hold.
The well-known quotation on this image, "Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds," is the unofficial motto of the United States Postal Service.
Though many malign the postal service, you have in me a staunch supporter. A firm believer in the power and importance of letters and cards, I send out three to four dozen postcards a month in addition to depending on the USPS for virtually all my other correspondence and parcel needs. The local office has been a godsend the last two months especially as I have ramped up my efforts to maintain contact with and support friends and family in the face of social distancing restrictions.
