Description
A beautiful pipe organ dominates the gallery of the west end of Holy Name Cathedral in Chicago, Illinois. The large, 71-stop instrument was built by a firm in the Netherlands. Gothic Revival style arches separate the two side aisles from the pews in the center and lead the eye down the center aisle of the nave to the narthex (lobby or entrance) area in the west end of the church.
The cathedral itself is the seat of the Archdiocese of Chicago; it has been rebuilt, reconstructed, and renovated several times since it was built in the early 1870’s after two other Catholic churches on the site were destroyed by the Great Chicago Fire of 1871.
