Description
I was out for a country drive when this beautiful old barn, surrounded by yellow flowers, caught my eye. When I stopped for permission to take pictures, no one was home so I went on my way. But I couldn't get the barn out of my mind! Since it faced west, I knew it would look even lovelier late in the afternoon, so I decided to retrace my route on the way home. This time luck was with me. The flowers are wild mustard (Sinapis arvensis), also known as field mustard. Cows normally graze in this pasture, and though the farm owner says they don't love the plant, they do eat it. However, water issues meant the cows are elsewhere this year - another piece of luck for me - though not for the farmers or cattle.
